Passes
milestone by shipping one millionth ONT
FTTH Council Europe (Lisbon), February 25, 2010— Alcatel-Lucent
(Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it has significantly
enhanced its portfolio of gigabit passive optical network (GPON)-based optical
network terminals (ONTs). The addition of eight new models allows
Alcatel-Lucent to respond to service providers’ specific ONT-requests in record
time and fully support their aggressive time-to-market objectives when
deploying fiber-based networks.
ONTs are located at end-users’ premises and convert optical signals back
into electrical voice, video or data. Their smooth deployment and installation
is absolutely crucial to a quick adoption of fiber-based services offerings,
and should not be hampered by the need for service providers’ specific, one-off
feature requests.
Alcatel-Lucent’s expanded ONT portfolio presents service providers with more
options when extending fiber to multiple dwelling units (MDUs) and single
family homes. For instance, as part of this announcement Alcatel-Lucent now
also offers indoor models with integrated residential gateway and Wi-Fi
features.
With this announcement Alcatel-Lucent not only continues its role as
offering the largest GPON ONT portfolio in the industry but also demonstrates
its commitment to providing unrivalled time-to-market. Its ultimate aim: the
creation of true multi-vendor GPON networks without operational challenges.
“Alcatel-Lucent continues to innovate in the GPON space, encouraging the
adoption of fiber-to-the-home by breaking down interoperability barriers and
deployment challenges,” says Dave Geary, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s wireline
networks activities. “A couple of months ago, we announced a first important
initiative to realize this vision, by sharing our OMCI specifications with
other vendors. In the meantime, Alcatel-Lucent has been furthering this effort
by incorporating in its products the OMCI implementer’s guide version-2,
a standards-based OMCI for GPON networks. Today’s expansion of our GPON ONT
portfolio is another concrete proof point of our commitment to fiber.”
“We just passed the milestone of having shipped our one millionth ONT and
look forward to continuing to partner with service providers around the world,
helping them achieve their vision of building true fiber nations,” he
added.
Alcatel-Lucent is the worldwide leader in fixed broadband access, supporting
the largest mass deployments of video, voice and data services. Today, one out
of three fixed broadband subscribers around the world is served through an
access network provided by Alcatel-Lucent. Alcatel-Lucent is currently involved
in over 95 FTTH projects worldwide, over 80 of which are with GPON.
Alcatel-Lucent’s portfolio of GPON ONTs was awarded an IEC InfoVision Award
during the latest Broadband World Forum Europe (September ’09).
