The Alcatel-Lucent 400G Photonic Service Engine (PSE) is the first-ever commercially available electro-optics chip capable of driving traffic up to 400 gigabits per second (Gb/s). Versatile and scalable, it dramatically boosts the performance of 100G networks today—and lays the foundation for 400G transport down the road.
Built on in-house Bell Labs research and extensive field experience with 100G deployments, the 400G PSE is designed specifically for our 1830 Photonic Service Switch. It delivers 4X the speed of 100G and increases the capacity of today’s transport networks, while improving efficiency and better addressing the massive growth of broadband traffic.
The 400G PSE accelerates network speeds fourfold and delivers the highest possible performance per wavelength at 100G. It has the ability to pack more wavelengths into every fiber through waveform engineering, with the potential to increase spectral efficiency by as much as 33 percent.

It features a market-first transmit digital signal processor (DSP), enabling wave shaping to improve tolerance to nonlinearlities. The 400G PSE also cuts power consumption by 33 percent per gigabit of transport. And it can be tuned to optimize performance per route—for example, by dialing pre-compensation up or down to address chromatic dispersion and extend reach.
The 400G PSE chip furthers the well-established legacy of innovation at Bell Labs. It combines new modulation formats with coherent technology and advanced digital signal processing (DSP) to pack more information into every optical transmission. The newly developed transmit DSP can shape wavelengths—allowing better spectral efficiency, better tolerance to nonlinearity and improved noise reduction. The 400G PSE also features ultrafast digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters, powerful DSP-based forward-error correction and a host of other advancements to deliver the best possible performance and versatility.
