The Alcatel-Lucent 100G coherent transmission solution is built on performance-enhancing innovations including unique, highly advanced electro-optics technology. That chipset combines optimized signal modulation and coherent detection along with analog to digital conversion and digital signal processing. Based on in-house designs, it was created expressly for our 100G solutions—providing the highest current transmission reach in the industry, superior dispersion tolerance, resilience to linear and non-linear effects, and rapid configurability.

The technologies that make it tick

Coherent detection at the receiver, which permits recovery of the entire optical signal, giving access to all signal information including polarization, amplitude and phase. It also enables digital conversion and processing of the optical modulated signal at the receiver.

A multilevel modulation format that makes it possible to modulate high-speed (40G or 100G) signals using the two polarization fields and the phase domain. This means multiple bits can be packed into each transmitted symbol, optimizing the overall baud rate (symbols transmitted per second). The Alcatel-Lucent solution supports 25Gbaud for 100 Gb/s and 20Gbaud for 40 Gb/s. These rates minimize the non-linear effects generated by traditional amplitude modulated signals at 10G, ensuring the best reach and performance for transmission in an ITU-T 50Ghz grid.

Advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms based on an Alcatel-Lucent chipset that handles input data at 1.8 terabits per second. Every chip has tens of millions of logic gates for processing, recovering high baud rate signals at the receiver. These chips compensate for linear transmission impairments like Chromatic Dispersion (CD) and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). They also address non-linear distortions introduced by neighboring lower speed channels (e.g., 10G).

Leading the 100G era

We started researching 100G in 2005. Two years later, we kicked off the 100G era with the industry’s first field trial of 100 Gb/s optical transmission. Completed over a live, in-service 504-km portion of the Verizon® network, it connected the Florida cities of Tampa and Miami. In 2009, we carried out the world’s first single-carrier 100 Gb/s field trial using a coherent receiver and the PDM-QPSK modulation format. In that case, a 112-Gb/s channel with commercial margins was transmitted with 40 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s channels on a 1,088-kilometer in Telefónica’s network in Spain. (Read more.) In 2010, Alcatel-Lucent brought the world its first complete, commercial 100G solution.

100G coherent: At work in the real world

Many industry leading service providers have already made the seamless transition to a 100G network thanks to Alcatel-Lucent. Portugal Telecom, ORION Canada and other adopters have become the first in their respective national markets to ‘go 100G’. Portugal Telecom established its country’s first 100G link, enhancing the capacity of its existing triple-play network capacity to exceed bandwidth demands and deliver new cloud services. (Read more) ORION is running Canada’s first operational 100G coherent network—also the world’s first 100G research and education network. (Read more) In October 2011, Rostelecom—Russia’s largest telecommunications company—upgraded its backbone network with the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS. Through that upgrade it achieved 100Gb/s transmission to the Middle East on a 3,500 km link. (Read more)
